The RAPID Manufacturing Instituteā„¢, part of the Manufacturing USA network, operates out of AIChE, and in partnership with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), to promote transformation of the chemical process industry with the goals of improving energy efficiency, reducing waste, and increasing safety and productivity.

Position Summary

The Program Manager works with RAPID's Technical Team to facilitate a wide range of technical activities within the RAPID Manufacturing Institute, and is a key component of RAPID project teams and acts as an interface between the project partners as well as the funding agencies technical and contracting functions. Specific responsibilities include coordinating project stewardship activities (reviews, reports, etc.), budget tracking and modifications, identifying new proposal opportunities and organize project teams, and communicating RAPID progress at public events/conferences.


Under the direction of the Chief Technology Officer, the Program Manager will achieve the following objectives:

  • Works as part of the RAPID Technical Team to review project results and progress and their contribution to Institute metrics. Works with Financial Team to execute and close sub-award agreements, and ensure they are correctly followed for all projects
  • Ensure project milestones and financials are properly reported to Institute Leadership and funding agencies.
  • Contribute to new funding proposals to agencies and other funding institutions.
  • Understands facility requirements prior to work being done. Ensures ongoing access for RAPID projects and safe operation.
  • Drive cross-fertilization and ensure strong communications across the Institute and project teams.


  • Knowledge and experience with contracts, licensing agreements and intellectual property protection
  • Working knowledge of project economics.
  • Track record for delivering results.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (verbal and written).
  • Experience in building and sustaining partner relationships.
  • Relationship management with multiple levels of stakeholders in a highly collaborative environment.
  • Advanced knowledge and proficiency of computer skills, including experience with MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams, and Zoom.

Education & Work Experience Requirements

  • BS in chemical engineering or related discipline required, with MS or PhD preferred.
  • Industrial experience of 10 years or more in process development, process optimization, process intensification, process design and/or equipment design.
  • Experience successfully executing/managing multi-partner federally funded projects.
  • Demonstrated expertise in process safety and environmental compliance.

Location & Travel

This position is remote, but is required to be located within the United States. On an as needed basis, the position may require approximately 30-50% travel.
